Dysport® and BOTOX® Cosmetic are injectable neuromodulators that temporarily relax specific facial muscles to soften expression lines and wrinkles. Both can produce natural-looking results when administered appropriately, but differences in formulation, dosing, onset, and how the products behave after injection can influence which treatment is best for you.
At Advanced Aesthetics, I have extensive experience with neuromodulators and have come to prefer Dysport for many of my patients. The most important factor, however, is creating results that look refreshed rather than frozen or artificial.
What Is the Difference Between Dysport and BOTOX?
Dysport and BOTOX are both forms of botulinum toxin type A. They work by temporarily reducing nerve signals to targeted muscles. As those muscles relax, dynamic wrinkles caused by repeated facial expressions become less noticeable.
The products are formulated and dosed differently, so their units are not interchangeable. They may also differ somewhat in how quickly patients notice results and how they spread within a treatment area.
In my practice, I appreciate how Dysport can create a smooth, natural-looking improvement across areas such as the forehead while maintaining a normal facial expression.
What Areas Can Dysport and BOTOX Treat?
Neuromodulators are particularly effective for dynamic wrinkles. These are the lines that become more noticeable when you smile, squint, raise your eyebrows, or frown.
Common treatment areas include:
- Frown lines between the eyebrows
- Horizontal forehead lines
- Crow’s feet around the eyes
- Certain lines around the nose and mouth
- Other areas where excessive muscle activity affects facial appearance
The appropriate injection sites and dosage depend on your facial anatomy, muscle strength, and goals.
Does Dysport Work Faster Than BOTOX?
Dysport may begin working within a few days, although the exact onset varies from patient to patient. BOTOX also begins taking effect within several days, and results from either product continue developing after treatment.
Rather than choosing a neuromodulator solely because it may start working a little sooner, I recommend considering the overall quality of the result, your previous experience with injectables, and how well a particular product works for you.
Does Dysport Last Longer Than BOTOX?
Both Dysport and BOTOX provide temporary results. For many patients, neuromodulator results last approximately 3 to 4 months, although individual longevity varies.
Factors such as your metabolism, treatment area, muscle strength, dosage, and previous treatments can influence how long your results last. Some patients find that they personally get longer-lasting results from one product than another.
Regular treatments can help maintain a consistently refreshed appearance.
Does Dysport Look More Natural Than BOTOX?
Either product can produce natural-looking results when it is injected correctly.
A frozen or expressionless appearance is generally related more to injection technique, placement, and dosage than to the brand of neuromodulator used. My goal is to selectively relax the muscles contributing to unwanted wrinkles while preserving the expressions that make you look like yourself.
The best neuromodulator treatment should make you look rested and refreshed without making it obvious that you’ve had injections.
Can Dysport Be Combined With Dermal Fillers?
Yes. Dysport and dermal fillers address different aspects of facial aging and can complement each other.
Dysport reduces wrinkles caused by muscle movement, while fillers can restore volume, enhance facial contours, and soften certain folds or creases. Combining the two as part of a liquid facelift can provide more comprehensive facial rejuvenation for appropriately selected patients.
Is Dysport Better Than BOTOX?
My patients who have tried Dysport are not going back to BOTOX. Across the board, patients who have taken the Dysport challenge prefer it to BOTOX. The correct placement of the right amount of Dysport creates wonderful results in raising brows, smoothing frown lines, forehead lines, and crow’s feet.
Our approach is to create a younger look without looking plastic, frozen, or artificial, making others wonder if you’ve lost weight, are happier, or are just well-rested. The untreated areas of your face remain unaffected, so your laugh and smile look like your normal ones.
Can I Switch From BOTOX to Dysport?
Yes. Patients who have previously used BOTOX can generally try Dysport. Because the products are dosed differently, your treatment should be planned specifically for Dysport rather than simply duplicating the number of BOTOX units you previously received.
Why Your Injector Matters
The choice between Dysport and BOTOX is only part of the equation. Neuromodulator treatment requires a detailed understanding of facial anatomy, muscle movement, dosing, and facial balance.
At Advanced Aesthetics, I personalize Dysport treatments based on how your face moves, rather than relying on a standard injection pattern. My goal is to soften the lines that bother you while maintaining the expressions and characteristics that make your face uniquely yours.
