As the winter chill starts to melt away and summer awaits around the corner, laser hair removal is heating up at my Coeur d’Alene medical spa. Endless shaving, tweezing, waxing, and plucking are no fun when the warmer months roll around. An effortlessly hair-free look is possible, however, and while it may seem early, now is the perfect time to start prepping for silky summer skin.
In this blog post, I’ll answer a few of the questions I most often receive about laser hair removal, from how much it costs to how long you can expect your results to last.
How Does Laser Hair Removal Work?
Laser hair removal works by damaging hair follicles to prevent or significantly slow future growth. The laser emits heat that the hair’s melanin absorbs, destroying and deactivating the follicle. Because the treatment targets melanin, it works best for those with light brown to black hair, whereas people with very light gray, blonde, or red hair may not be able to achieve the same results.
Is Laser Hair Removal Safe for All Skin Types?
When done properly, laser hair removal is safe for all skin types. Our office uses two lasers, the Cynosure® Elite+™ laser and the GentleMax Pro®, which use 2 distinct light wavelengths and can be adjusted to safely treat a full spectrum of fair to deep skin.
How Much Does Laser Hair Removal Cost?
The cost of laser hair removal at our Coeur d’Alene, ID, clinic starts at $75 and varies depending on the size of the treatment area. We will provide you with a personalized quote at the time of your consultation, so you know what to expect in terms of pricing.
Does Laser Hair Removal Hurt?
Some people say each pulse of the laser feels like a rubber band snap on the skin—a little uncomfortable but not necessarily painful. If you plan to treat a large area such as the back, you may want to opt for the GentleMax Pro® laser. It delivers faster treatments and has a built-in cooling system to keep you comfortable throughout your treatment.
How Many Laser Hair Removal Sessions Will I Need?
We typically recommend 6 sessions spaced a few weeks apart to see the best results. Hair follicles enter the active phase of the growth cycle at different times, so repeating treatments after a few weeks of growth allows us to effectively treat as many active follicles as possible.
Should I Shave Before Laser Hair Removal?
It’s best to shave about 24 hours before laser hair removal to achieve the best results. Shaving directly before your appointment may cause some skin irritation, and shaving any earlier may leave the hair too long for proper treatment. You can find more tips for laser hair removal prep in this blog post.
How Long Do Laser Hair Removal Results Last?
Results typically last for many months and even years. Some people choose to touch their results up every couple of years to keep their skin as smooth and hair-free as possible.
