4 Benefits of Liposuction: What Body Contouring Can—and Can’t—Do (Updated 2026)

Liposuction is a body contouring procedure that removes localized pockets of fat to create smoother, better-proportioned contours. It can be particularly helpful for areas that remain resistant to diet, exercise, or weight loss.

At Advanced Aesthetics, I perform liposuction with Smartlipo® for women and men who want to refine areas such as the abdomen, waist, thighs, arms, back, and under the chin. While liposuction is not a weight loss procedure, it can make a noticeable difference in body shape when you are already at or near a healthy, stable weight.

Here are 4 of the most important benefits.

  1. Liposuction Targets Stubborn Fat

Even people who exercise regularly and maintain a healthy diet can have areas of persistent fat. Genetics, age, hormones, and individual fat distribution all influence where your body tends to store fat.

Liposuction allows me to target these specific areas rather than reducing fat throughout the entire body. Common treatment areas include:

  • Abdomen and waist
  • Flanks or “love handles”
  • Back
  • Inner and outer thighs
  • Upper arms
  • Under the chin and along the jawline

The goal is not simply to remove fat. Strategic fat removal allows me to sculpt the treated area and improve its proportions relative to the rest of your body.

  1. Multiple Areas Can Be Contoured

Another benefit of liposuction is its versatility. In appropriately selected patients, we can treat multiple areas in a single procedure.

For example, treating the abdomen alone may reduce a stubborn bulge, but combining abdominal and flank liposuction can create a more comprehensive improvement around the waist. Similarly, contouring several adjacent areas can produce smoother transitions and more balanced proportions.

The appropriate combination depends on your anatomy, goals, health, and the amount of fat being removed.

  1. Liposuction Can Complement Other Body Contouring Procedures

Liposuction also works well alongside other cosmetic procedures. While liposuction removes unwanted fat, it does not remove substantial amounts of loose skin or repair separated abdominal muscles.

That distinction is important. Someone with good skin elasticity and localized abdominal fat may be a good candidate for liposuction, while significant loose skin or muscle separation may make a tummy tuck more appropriate. In some cases, combining techniques provides the best contour.

Choosing the right procedure starts with identifying what is actually causing the concern: excess fat, loose skin, muscle laxity, or a combination of these factors.

  1. Results Can Be Long Lasting

Liposuction permanently removes the treated fat cells. Once those cells are removed, they do not grow back.

That doesn’t mean your body cannot change through diet, exercise, or GLP-1 medications—and still benefit from liposuction for residual. Remaining fat cells can still enlarge with weight gain, and aging can affect skin elasticity and body contours. Maintaining a relatively stable weight with healthy lifestyle habits is the best way to preserve your results.

For many patients, long-lasting improvement in stubborn areas can also make clothes fit better and help their body shape feel more consistent with the work they put into staying healthy.

Is Liposuction a Weight Loss Procedure?

No. Liposuction is designed for body contouring, not significant weight loss.

Weight loss reduces the size of fat cells throughout the body. Liposuction physically removes fat cells from selected areas to change their contours. This is why someone can reach a healthy weight—or lose substantial weight with diet, exercise, or GLP-1 medications—and still benefit from liposuction for remaining areas of localized fat.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Liposuction?

Good candidates are generally healthy adults who are near a stable weight but have localized fat deposits they would like to improve. Having reasonably good skin elasticity is also beneficial because the skin needs to adapt to the newly reduced contours.

A consultation is the best way to determine whether liposuction, Smartlipo, another body contouring procedure, or a combination of treatments is most appropriate for your anatomy and goals. You can request a consultation by using the online form or by calling us at (208) 676-8346.

  • This is some great information, and I appreciate your point that liposuction is great for improving areas that are hard to target with exercise or diet. I’ve been changing my lifestyle, and while I’ve had some great success with losing weight, there are a few areas around my stomach and hips that I can’t seem to slim down. That’s the biggest problem I still have, so I’ll definitely look into using liposuction to take care of those areas. Thanks for the great post!

Thanks for pointing out that getting liposuction can improve your self-confidence and overall mental state. I recently attended a black tie event for my husband’s work, and I was feeling really self-conscious and unhappy almost the entire time. It would be great to get some of my confidence back. I think liposuction sounds like a good option for me!
