Laser Rejuvenation Sessions: How Many You’ll Need for Your Goal

Modern laser technologies are more advanced than ever, focused on delivering effective results while minimizing downtime. That often means gentler treatments performed in stages, allowing your skin to respond gradually and naturally.

One of the most important things to understand before starting laser skin treatments is that achieving meaningful, lasting results typically requires a series of sessions rather than a single visit. How many treatment sessions depends on the condition of your skin, laser therapy (or therapies) used, and intensity of the treatments.

Why Multiple Sessions Are the New Standard

In the past, many laser treatments relied on more intensive, ablative approaches that delivered dramatic results in one session but required significant downtime. Today’s technologies take a different approach.

Non-ablative and fractional lasers stimulate collagen gradually, improving tone, texture, and pigmentation over time. By spacing treatments out, we allow your skin to heal and rebuild between sessions, leading to more natural-looking, progressive results with less disruption to your routine.

For most patients, a series of 3 to 6 treatments spaced several weeks apart is typical, followed by occasional maintenance sessions. Many of our patients initiate their laser treatment plan in the fall or winter when shorter days limit sun exposure between treatments.

Ablative vs. Non-Ablative Laser Skin Resurfacing

Both ablative and non-ablative lasers rejuvenate the skin, but their healing experiences differ significantly.

  • Ablative lasers remove the outer layer of skin, creating a controlled wound that requires more downtime. Usually only one or two treatments are needed, but healing involves significant peeling, redness, and a longer recovery period with more dramatic results.
  • Non-ablative lasers keep the skin’s surface intact, resulting in significantly less downtime. Redness, mild swelling, and a temporary rough texture are common, but most patients return to normal activities quickly and see improvement over several weeks. Multiple treatment sessions are needed to get optimal results.

Designing a Treatment Plan To Meet Your Goals

The number of sessions you’ll need also depends on what you’re hoping to improve. For example, if you’re concerned about early signs of aging or minimal texture issues, a shorter series of treatments with a device such as Laser Genesis or UltraClear® likely will accomplish your goals with little to no downtime.

However, more severe sun damage, deep wrinkles, or acne scarring typically requires a more aggressive treatment using the SmartSkin CO2 laser. You may need fewer treatments, but the trade-off is more downtime. During your consultation, we customize your plan based on your skin condition and desired outcome.

Light & Bright: A Combination Approach

One of the most effective ways to accelerate results is by combining technologies. Our Light & Bright skin resurfacing treatment pairs Fraxel 1550 laser technology with Ellipse IPL™ (intense pulsed light) to address texture, pigmentation, and redness in a single session.

Fraxel 1550 works beneath the surface to stimulate collagen and improve skin texture, while IPL targets discolorations such as sunspots and redness. Because these are gentler, complementary treatments, patients typically benefit from a series of sessions to build and maintain results.

Typically, the Light & Bright laser resurfacing treatment consists of 3 treatment sessions, spaced 4 weeks apart, but we will recommend a customized treatment based on your goals and skin concerns.
