Liposuction & Scars: Where Incisions Go and How They Fade

Scarring after liposuction is an understandable concern, but the reality is that liposuction scars are typically very small, strategically placed, and designed to fade significantly over time.

In my practice, I’ve guided countless patients through this decision. I want to walk you through exactly what to expect and why most people are pleasantly surprised

Does Liposuction Leave Scars?

The Smartlipo® technique I use is a safe procedure performed with a thin tube, called a cannula, inserted through tiny incisions in the skin. These incisions are usually just a few millimeters long and placed in discreet locations whenever possible.

Depending on the treatment area, incisions may be placed:

  • Along natural body creases in areas like the abdomen and flanks.
  • Near the armpit or elbow when treating the upper arms.
  • Within natural folds beneath the chin for double-chin liposuction.

For patients having smaller areas treated, such as under the chin, incisions are especially subtle and often virtually undetectable once healed.

What Do Liposuction Scars Look Like?

In the early stages of healing, liposuction scars may appear slightly pink or raised. This is a normal part of the body’s healing response. Over time, they gradually flatten and lighten.

Most patients find that their scars continue to improve for several months, with the most noticeable fading occurring within the first 6 to 12 months after the procedure. In many cases, they become difficult to see unless you’re specifically looking for them.

How To Help Scars Fade More Effectively

While your body does most of the work, there are steps you can take to support optimal healing:

  • Follow post-procedure instructions carefully to minimize irritation and promote proper healing.
  • Protect incisions from sun exposure, as UV rays can darken scars.
  • Keep the area clean and moisturized once cleared by your surgeon.
  • Avoid unnecessary tension on healing skin, especially in areas like the abdomen or arms.

In addition to these steps, silicone-based scar treatments or other therapies can further improve the appearance of scars.

A Small Trade-Off for Noticeable Results

If you’re hesitant about getting liposuction because of potential scarring, you should know that the incisions are intentionally small because the goal is to minimize visible signs of treatment while maximizing contour improvement.
