Sclerotherapy

There are many treatments available to Idaho residents that help in the removal of unwanted veins, one of which is Sclerotherapy. Estimates show that over 50% of females have some type of spider or varicose vein dilemma and at Advanced Aesthetics, we want to help. Sclerotherapy is a treatment that involves injecting a solution into spider veins or varicose veins in order to eliminate them. Knowing if Sclerotherapy will work for you is incumbent upon discovering whether or not your veins are treatable. Knowing which types of veins you have is the first step to finding a solution.

There are two distinguishable types of veins, spider veins and varicose veins. Spider veins, which are also known as telangiectasias, are the small thin clusters of blue, red or purple veins, that lay close to the surface of the skin and most commonly appear on the legs and face. Varicose veins are larger veins that are found on the legs. They are blue or purple in color and cause large bulging knots to appear. These veins form due to damage that causes blood to flow backwards; subsequently pooling in these damaged veins. Both types of veins remain connected to the deep venous system however they are damaged and are of no benefit. Because of this, individuals who suffer with them search for ways to remove them.

Sclerotherapy involves injecting spider and varicose veins with an irritant to diminish or eliminate them. During treatment, a tiny needle is inserted just under the skin into the vein, a Sclerosing solution is then injected which causes irritation to the vein. As the clear solution is injected, it displaces the blood, which makes the vein disappear for a few seconds. The blood then returns to the allowing the solution to irritate the lumen or inner lining. The irritation causes the vein lining to swell thereby pushing out the blood. After the injection your Advanced Aesthetics physician will add a pressure type bandage to the treated area. Between the swelling of the vein due to irritation and the pressure caused by the pressure bandage, blood is unable to return to the vein, which ultimately leads to closure of the vein and eventual dissolving and reabsorption of the tissue.

The length of time that the pressure bandage will need to remain will depend on the severity of your problem, however time usually ranges from a few hours to a few days. A minimum of two Sclerotherapy sessions are required at Advanced Aesthetics, this provides patients with the most effective treatment results. The amount of treatments needed by each patient will ultimately depend on how many veins need to be removed.

Common side effects of this treatment include hyper-pigmentation, a skin pigment irregularity which can take from a few months to a year to fade and telangectatic matting , which involves more tiny veins appear in an area, causing the need for re injection. It is important for patients to be aware that the treated area will initially look worse before it looks better because the irritation to the vein often causes it to look more pronounced.

Sclerotherapy is a treatment that is most effective when the larger problem veins are treated first. Often the spider and varicose veins are a symptom of a deep venous problem therefore undergoing Sclerotherapy in conjunction with EVLT or laser vein therapy at Advanced Aesthetics gets patients the best possible results.
