Sclerotherapy is one of many treatments available that help in the removal of unwanted veins. This treatment involves injecting a solution into spider veins or varicose veins in order to eliminate them. Candidates for Sclerotherapy
Sclerotherapy is a vein removal treatment for women and men with varicose or spider veins. Candidates have several spider or varicose veins that are damaged and can be removed. Dr. Johnson will decide during consultation whether or not you are a candidate. Instead of sclerotherapy, he may recommend laser vein treatments to address your unwanted veins.
There are two distinguishable types of veins: spider veins and varicose veins. Spider veins, which are also known as telangiectasias, are the small clusters of blue, red or purple veins that lay close to the surface of the skin and most commonly appear on the legs and face. Varicose veins are larger veins that are found on the legs. They are blue or purple in color and cause large bulging knots to appear. Both types of veins remain connected to the deep venous system however they are damaged and are of no benefit. People with both spider veins and varicose veins can seek treatment at our offices.
Benefits of sclerotherapy may include:
- Relatively fast procedure
- Improvement in appearance of spider and varicose veins
- Improvement in overall appearance of the skin
With sclerotherapy, many patients report that they see significant improvement in their spider or varicose veins, and their skin looks clear and smooth.
Sclerotherapy for varicose and spider veins for Spokane and Coeur d'Alene women and men involves injecting the veins with an irritant to diminish or eliminate them. As the clear solution is injected, it displaces the blood, which makes the vein disappear for a few seconds. The injected solution irritates the lumen or inner lining of the vein, causing swelling that pushes out the blood. After the injection, a pressure-type bandage will be added to the treated area. Between the swelling of the vein due to irritation and the pressure caused by the pressure bandage, blood is unable to return to the vein, which ultimately leads to closure of the vein and eventual dissolving and reabsorption of the tissue.

Recovery & Results
A minimum of 2 sclerotherapy sessions are required at Advanced Aesthetics, in order to provide patients with the most effective treatment results. The number of treatments needed by each patient will ultimately depend on how many veins need to be removed. It is important for patients to be aware that the treated area will initially look worse before it looks better because the irritation to the vein often causes it to look more pronounced.
